Assalamu alaikum everyone,
I wanted to share a reflection on something that quietly drains our daily productivity and focus: the scrolling trap.
The Algorithm vs. Our Intentions
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to lose an hour on social media without even realizing it? The truth is, the UI/UX of these apps is meticulously engineered to force us into a habit of mindless scrolling.
Our brains are wired to accept these quick dopamine hits and often can’t distinguish whether this scrolling loop is a "good" or "bad" habit. But our hearts know the difference. Deep down, we know when we are wasting our time, compromising our focus, or failing to lower our gaze.
Overriding the Habit
The good news is that existing habits can be overridden by new, more powerful ones.
This realization made me ask myself a tough question: When was the last time I opened the Quran and read it in a truly meaningful way? When did I last think deeply about a single verse and actively connect it to my daily life?
Allah says in the Quran: " أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَآ" (Will they not contemplate the Quran? Do they have locks on their hearts?)
Building a Habit of Daily Tadabbur
If we don't want to be slaves to our screens or our nafs, we have to intentionally unlock our hearts. Scientifically speaking, habits are never truly erased or deleted from the brain. So, deleting all your social media is not the solution. Once a neural pathway for a habit forms, that memory trace stays permanently. The best way to break the scrolling habit is by actively replacing it with a habit of daily Tadabbur.
This is exactly why we are building Maani (https://www.maani.tech/). It’s a platform and community designed to help us reflect on the Quran in a structured, scholar-approved way. Maani gives you the space to dive deep into any ayah, learn it in depth from 14+ tafseers in your language in a conversational way with AI assistant and discuss it directly with globally recognized scholars and fellow students of the Quran.
Let’s reclaim our time and build digital habits that actually serve our spiritual growth.
I’d love to hear from this community: How do you currently protect your focus from digital distractions to make time for the Quran? Let me know below! 👇
